C.v.s The Abstract

I been asking myself this question, Why is it, Capcom vs Snk spriting and Playing style is so popular?
I mean their also KOFXII that also popular for their styles aswell. But i guess i wanna hear yall opinion on whats makes Cvs so great. Gameplay wise or Spriting wise.

both are legends in fighting games. capcom and snk were the greatest rivals back in the 90's. and maybe CVS is the first crossover game that had different grooves. at that time it was kinda remarkable,

Froz

the Gameplay, system, and spriting (Alpha sprites doesn't count.) style also gave a huge impact as well.

The setting, the gameplay, the character roster, the music, the gameplay..the gameplay..did i mention the gameplay?
Yeah, thats why this game is maybe still popular

The re-using of the alpha and darkstalkers sprites were the only little downfall for these awesome games.

i don't know, really. i mean yeah it's a good game and all but to me it's not a godsend or anything and is way overrated

that and they could really use some better rosters. snk's was alright but god was capcom's dull

ACK-YES-THIS. I completely forgot about that.

If it wasn't for Morrigan (and a few characters i can't remember on snk's side) it would of been called Street Fighters VS King of Fighters, and i guess that's how CVS got so popular, i mean, with both of the sides being so dull, it made fans think, wonder and hope of new possibilities of many characters being added or replacing the old ones.

I guess capcom decided its wiser to limit the roster to SF and KOF characters mostly because KOF was (and is) SNK`s flagship when it came to fighting games. The most important AOF and FF characters were KOF characters as well and so capcom didnt include Resident Evil or Megaman characters as example ..it would have been really cool though if the game had a cast with characers from more series. Oh shit..i think like in 2001 again.

SF and KOF are their top fighting game franchises, of course they're gonna focus on characters from those series. That said they did have representatives from other games, even unlikely picks such as Eagle, Maki, Todoh, and Raiden.

It seems to me like they were focusing on the fighting game franchise portions of each company. But "Capcom's Fighting Game Franchises vs SNK's Fighting Game Franchises" is kind of a mouthful!

Bastard Mami

complaining about cvs's snk side having mostly kof characters is pretty lame considering that kof itself is a dream match and already has characters from classic and forgotten (even at the time ) games like athena, ikari warriors, etc...

Nah, they were mostly focussing on their top franchises...sadly. If it would have been a "Capcom's Fighting Game Franchises vs SNK's Fighting Game Franchises game we should have seen at least 3 Darkstalkers, more than one Rival School Character, at least one from Star Gladiator, 1 Red Earth Character ..from SNK there could have been at least 3 Samurai Shodown characters, 2-3 from LB, 2-3 more Fatal Fury characters which werent included in KOF yet and of course 1-2 AOF characters as well..

Its basically sf vs kof roster wise , but what does that matter when the game is great in general :-)

This.

Not to mention none of the SNK characters in CVS2 except the ones that actually debuted in KOF were based on KOF at all.  Terry was clearly based on Fatal Fury, with Buster Wolf and such, Ryo was based on Art of Fighting with long range Kouken, etc.  The only true KOF characters on the SNK side are Kyo, Benimaru, Iori, Chang, Vice, Rugal and Athena.

Niitris

It's because of the versatility.

The grooves system make it feel like there was more than one version of a character (even though the moves were the same). The fact that you had six choices made the possibilities for near endless combinations.

The roster was okay. Capcom used the "KoF tournament atmosphere" as the theme, and because of this, used mostly characters from the fist-fighter series. SvC didn't have that theme and had a more diverse roster. Too bad the game itself wasn't as good.

Basara Bogard

It was a success for the time, I may say it was the top point of 2D fighting games, with great graphics, sprites well-defined and an enjoyable gameplay, with 6 grooves to choose that can emule since KOF and SF series to Samurai Shodown and SFA3's Custom Combo

Also, I like the idea of revive forgotten characters from both franchises, as Raiden, Ryuhaku Todoh and Hibiki Takane for SNK side, as well Eagle, Kyosuke and Makifor Capcom side. And don't forget the cameos on the stages, the most notable for me are Falcon (Power Stone) with Leona (KOF) in CVS2 Desert stage. Also, this is the first game Rock Howard appeared after Garou: MOTW, gaining more popularity since then to be added in later SNK games (SVC: Card Fighter Clash series, KOF: Maximum Impact series, Neogeo Battle Coliseum) and considered one of the best addings to CVS2

Jmorphman

Hibiki and Kyosuke weren't forgotten, they were just in recent (in 2000/2001 of course) games. :|

Seconded, especially the sound effects and voice acting. A lot of the best-voiced versions of those characters were from the CvS games (a few, like Dictator and Ken, have the same VAs as recently as SF4), and the sound effects are high enough quality that even with new SFX available, Mugen characters still overuse the hell out of the hitspark sounds. Also, the effects were, for the first time in either companies' fighting games, made to utilize the more advanced graphical capabilities of modern arcade systems (and the consoles the game was ported to), allowing for more visually impressive effects than any other two-dimensional fighting game at the time.

Like so many other users have said, Capcom could have been less lazy with their own roster, however. Felo's Sagat sprite is probably the most recent looking sprite made since Street Fighter Alpha was released in the arcades back in 1995 (CvS Morrigan has it worse, but bear in mind the various people that have made CvS Morrigan sprites, and the one guy who made a whole sprite set AND put them in an edited version of PotS' Morrigan).

Most of what was mentioned had to do with sprites, music, arcade board, roster, and grooves. And I agree, CvS2 had the BEST voices for most of the KOF side. Even Sander71113 used Kyo's CvS voice samples. He did the same for his Iori as well.

Let me add a few other things that made the game unique:

- Very competitive game
- Strict timing on combos
- K-Groove damage is BADASS
- C-Groove Lvl 2 Cancelling was SICKKKK
- Rolling was really enhancing for charge characters like Guile, Bison, Vega. Roll ---> Summersault is sick
- Extreme execution. To land all your moves and strategies, everything rises and falls on your skill of executing. Linking normals into supers was SICK....
- FINEST KO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Shin Akuma's Misogi that is in no other game besides SvC
- The ratio system is just... AWESOME!

This game is the hardest game to master. It is more complex than 3rd Strike, in every way imaginable. Moves are harder to do, negative edge is higher, the roster is bigger so you gotta learn more matchups, the 6 grooves makes you have to learn more different matchups, in this game if you make one mistake, you can get punished way harsher than 3rd strike (a punish from a K-Groove super is done deal :D)

there's a lot more that I love about this game
