QuoteProbably the same game every Rare fan wants to see and that's KI3 (Killer Instinct 3). We all wanted to make KI3, but Microsoft [was] more interested in broadening their demographic than making another fighting game.  So it never got made, I doubt it ever will.

The death of a loved fighting franchise deserves its own thread, I think.

Basara Bogard

I agree, this deserves its own thread. Stupid Microsoft, stupid stupid stupid!! :furious3:

Seadragon77

More then just stupid, Basara Mystery... This is basically mentally retarded IMO. Rare had to basically give up on a good fighter because Microsoft wanted to grab their share of the casual crowd.

Why, man? Why sacrafice a good fighter for some half-assed POS casual game that'll only sell because it's the 'it' market?

*sigh*

you just answered your own question

Jmorphman

Probably more of a mercy killing, given Rare's output for the last... wow, it's been over a decade since Rare has made a good game. This is probably for the best.

cause it was a half-assed POS casual game thats no longer part of the 'it' market?  :mmhmm:

Makkah

Well, I always told myself that I'd get a 360 if Rare put out a new KI, but I guess that's never going to happen. At the end of the day it's for the best though. Rare's top talent jumped ship years ago.

Dude, not funny.

Bastard Mami

just true, it managed to fit a very nice niche, as doujin fighting games barely existed back then so it was the original combo centric fighting game.

D.R.B

they made it clear that they don't want a fighting game - one slap to the face Rare for trusting Microsoft

Titiln

fuck them for doing games that are whatever the popular genre is now. wish they could be innovative again, like when they released killer instinct. which also was when mortal kombat and street fighter and a bunch of other fighting games were all the rage. lol

Keku

Actually, SFIV bringing fighters back was the perfect time to do that, and the market was blooming once more, what with its overall simplified core.

Bring back Diddy Kong Racing, then!

Mind if I jump on in to help cut the wound deeper?

Its sad to see them mention such great titles along side bargain bin Kinect titles. Like more then maybe 1/3 of them still there were even around for half of those games development. Its always been clear though how much Mircosoft gave one shit about the fighting game genre and sadly this was a causality of their rightfully money making deal with current big shooters.

Yeah, this can probably be said for many game companies nowadays (if not most of them).
Unfortunately, because of the latest consoles and the costs of making games, companies can't afford to be as creative anymore. Games cost so expensive to create that failing to sell well as single game may have some catastrophic repercussion on the company... so they create Battlefield 43, Soul Calibur 55, Fifa 2024, etc. which they know will sell no matter what (and you can use half of the code of the previous game too).
And when you see games such as ICO on PS2 being fabulous but selling very badly, no wonder game companies don't want to be creative anymore. :(

The future of creativity is in Indie games on PC, a bit in phones games (iOS, Android), and (let's hope) in Ouya.

Makkah

That's why I wish it was Sony that bought them instead. They aren't afraid to take a few risks if they believe in something.

RobotMonkeyHead

There fucking needs to be a KI3. I can't imagine it wouldn't sell.  Soul Calibur 55, Street Fighter 4, Mortal Kombat (9) all suggest that there is at least some market for fighting games.  Of all those classics that are on their 10th installments Killer Instinct was just as loved in it's day.  I blame poor decision making and company disconnect from the demographic before economic viability.
