Eh, Nintendo was pretty heavily involved with The Twin Snakes. It probably played a not insignificant factor for Snake being added.

That, and the fact that Sakurai and Kojima are close friends and it was done as a favor as much as anything else.  IIRC, Kojima had been begging for Snake to be in since before Melee.

We actually have something similar like that already in USF4, with all the unplayable BG-only and backstory-only characters Capcom provided us in the life of Street Fighter, though it's still not that extreme like the Smash Bros dilemmas.

Saying Ridley is too big for Smash Bros is kind of irrelevant since Bowser's size difference to Mario has depended entirely on the game where in some he's entire stories bigger than Mario and others he's just like 3 feet taller.
