While making fonts, I'm trying to figure out why fonts need def and sff files. How do you even make them in font factory?
If there are any problems, let me know. I will try to fix them as soon as possible.

They DONT need def and sff files. You can save them as .fnt files. That's what I do.

You MAKE the fonts in photoshop or something like that, then you just create the actual .fnt file in font factory. If you open a .fnt file in Font Factory you'll see how to set them up. the size is up to you. Just don't make them too big unless you're using HD/widescreen

.fnt files are the old standard. Font Factory was meant for those. You can work still work with those, but they're not worth the trouble imo.

The newer standard is either a normal normal .sff file with the individual characters mapped to specific numbers, or an actual windows font file. The .def file barely holds some information (sff file location, name, and character width/height).
