where do I mess with the crouching? I'm still a newbie on mugen so sorry if this seems like a stupid question.

First, copy the common1.cns file in the data folder of your mugen and put it in your character (if you don't have it).
Second, open the character and go in the common1.cns.
Statedef 11 is for crouching.

I already have a cns. I'm still a trainee so my base is Kung Fu Man.

Go into your mugen directory.  Go to folder /Data and find "common1.cns"

That file is filled with the common state controllers that all characters use.  If you include one of those States in your character's CNS, it will overwrite the "default" one found in common1.cns

So if you create a State 11 definition in your character's CNS, the default behavior in Common1.cns will be ignored completely.

Therefore, it is recommended that you copy the data for State 11 from Common1.cns, paste it into your CNS file, and then edit it from there.  That way, you have a base to start with instead of trying to recode crouching from scratch.
