Does anybody have any suggestions as to why the BGM sounds like a CD that was scraped against a brick wall?

Because you don't have the good plug-ins to play music.

The plug-in put with mugen to read music is just plain crap, try using in-mp3.DLL instead (a winamp plug-in)

I switched the plugins and it says I need NSCRT.dll.  So I put that in there and the whole thing crashes.

( ゚ o゚) It's Urza!

I'm guessing that after you run Mugen for a while, the music starts to run clearer?

Ecchi, it calls to me...

Download the in-mp3.dll plug-in from winamps site (or take it from your winamp folder) and put it in the plugins folder of winmugen.
Open mugen.cfg and look for the lines related to plusgins, where "inmad.dll" should be written. Change its name to in-mp3 and save.
You're done.

I've done the all and it says can't read application because nscrt.dll is missing please reinstall to fix this problem.

Download a new version of mugen and take those plugs and put them in you current plug-ins folder remember it has to be empty first.
