The slow extinction of 2D fighting games

Has anyone else noticed that fighting games are starting to fade away? Like I've been noticing that SNK has been throwing out shitty archives to scrape money and the MK series kinda stopped. The only companies that I know of that are still keeping true with fighting games are capcom, namco, and sammy. I'm not sure of SNK's whereabouts though. :blank:

It's true that if you own a PS3 then all arguments made by those who don't have one are invalid.

No. There's work on a new game. And I'm not too sure if this will come through, but I heard that the next MK game will use the Quake Engine (not a rumor).

The last one was the end of that generation of MK fighters, but that wasn't really the final MK.

Unreal Engine 3,not the Quake 4 engine.

Its also confirmed that its the UE3 engine by Midway itself.

Ah, sorry. Being as I have little experience with either (by little, I mean none), so, yeah, got them confused.

I think KOF XI may have been the last 2D KOF (unless they want to do them on handhelds), but I found KOF 2006 to be fairly close to its 2D origins. It could just be me, though. It's hard to tell whether people want to complain about the fact that it's visually 3D and they miss their sprites or that the game has actually changed significantly (which I don't feel that it has) and for the worse.

The only true 3D fighting game I've played is OMF:BG, although there are probably others by now. Most games claiming to be 3D fighters are just 2D fighters with the occasional sidestep, or even the ability to run freely through some complex procedure, until they decide to start actually fighting again, where the only option is to face them on a 2D plane.

ah now i remember. yes, you are correct. but I have a feeling that the new project MK has isn't going to be as satisfying. Nothing is as good as the original.

I wouldn't say that they'd go extinct necessarily. After all we still have them. If they did they would have been gone by the late 90's.

I say that fighting games are chaging but they often go back to their roots every now and again.

OZ

2-D fighters will always have a certain charm that can't be captured through other means.
For that reason I believe that the 2-D shall live on.

The last Soul Caliber game made sidestepping easier than previous games. You could actually circle the opponent, and sidestep attacks actually became useful.

Back to 2D Fighters - Entertainment has always been a cutting edge business. In order to keep people entertained, you must catch their attention with the latest stuff... that's if you lack some other stuff (like actual depth) on what you're offering.

The evolution and upgrades of games of all genres stems in the principle of keeping people interested. Fighting games are no exception. More characters, new features, new systems, better graphics, tag teaming, absurdly long combos (SUP KILLER INSTINCT) - 3D is just the next step.

Will they completely die out? I think so.
But that will make every single new one that comes out a lot more valuable, since now we understand how difficult it is to make/color/animate  2D sprites in low res.

OZ

The next generation may drop 2-D's,
but this generation will probably never forget the excitement and nostalgia that is the 2-D fighter.

Thinking about it, KI was one of the few fighting games I've seen that had multiple versions in both 3D (Arcade) and 2D (SNES/GB).

The only one one I can think of is MK: Deadly Alliance.

SDS Overfiend

Shit if Capcom keeps making them sure they will be extinct.

Sammy makes good-looking 2D Fighting but as far as playing goes......................Yuck

I mean with all these high-powered systems a good 2D fighting game should not be hard to create from scratch. I mean the hi-res 3D backgrounds and character always seem like a good idea to strat with.
with everything being online there's a market for all.
i swear, Stupid muthafokkers exist all over this board!
Nonetheless Dickriders get all of the Attention!

2D fighting games are disappearing from the gaming world (except mugen) because soon pretty much every fighting game will be in 3D, maybe even portables.

Why did I say (except mugen)? Because mugen is FAR OFF from reaching a 3D point.
I'm a Princess Peach fan obviously, but I can't seem to stay away from Rimururu (I'm saying I like her)
