Only on PS3 games. "Disc" PS2 and PS1 are not region free, but I didn't try out buying PS1 Classics from another region, though.

Not quite sure I understood. So a japanese PS2 game wouldn't play on a US PS3?

PS2 import games will not work on a US PS3.

Ok, sorry. I will elaborate more my answer.

It is not possible to play region 2 game DISCS on a region 1 PS3 (Japanese games on US PS3), but since Sony offers downloadable PS1 and -in the future- PS2 games, you could be able to simply buy some Jap games from the PS Store an play it from your hard drive.
