Sapphire Flame's help thread as I make my first character

I've followed the advice of the tutorial included with WinMUGEN to the letter, but instead what I've gotten is a mess nothing like the colors I've specified. Whenever I try to view the sprite using the pallete, it becomes a total mess. All I want is to open the sprite, get the colors from the sprite, make a pallete using those colors, and specify one to be transparent. So what I'm asking is... got any advice? I'm using Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0

Just a minor heads-up: You can be expecting a lot of these types of questions in the future as I learn the ropes of making my first character.

The new colors must be placed on the exact position as the original palette, otherwise they will look weird. I've never used Adobe Photoshop Elements, but I hope it's similar to Photoshop.

To modify the palette, just do the following steps:
- open the sprite
- On the top menu select Image -> Mode -> Color Table
- The palette will be displayed on the screen, double click on any color and modify it
- Save the palette when done, and that's all you need.

Yeah, I know that. However, it doesn't seem to be working. All I want is to get a transparent background. I've been trying to get it all afternoon and it doesn't seem to be working. All I need is to get the pallet from the sprite, take it to Fighter Maker, and have it not turn my character all screwy. Whenever I try taking the pallet I made into Fighter Maker, it screws it up and turns it weird colors that look nothing like the pallet I made in photoshop.

post/upload one sprite with the palette "already fixed".

http://www.This link no longer works, sorry/?d=63TL8TFC

Included is the original sheet and, one of the sprites I've been trying to get to work (in PNG and PCX form), and the pallete in question. Hope it helps. Knowing me, it's probably something really simple I've overlooked.

I figured it was something to do with the colors. Thanks! For future reference, what did you do so I can do it on my own from now on?

EDIT: Um... making a pallete from that sprite still makes the pallete all weird. How do I open up .pal files?

try comparing the png I uploaded to teh one you had and see the differences. What I did was just decrease teh color depth to 256 colors. But instead of usnig adobe stuff I use a program that is specific for sprite editing.

Which program was that? Would it matter which one I used in any case? Because if I applied that pallete to my other sprites I want it to show up the same. In any case, thanks for your help and thanks for being patient with me.

EDIT: Nevermind, tried it with photoshop and it worked fine. Thanks so much for the help, everyone.

Palletes?
When I do palletes I usually use wood and nails.

All right, I've edited the topic title because I figured that it'd be much easier to keep my questions in one topic. So, I want my character to have helpers but I'm not sure how to add them. Do they have to share a pallete with my main character? Because I'm planning to make him summon quite a few enemies since he has a limited sprite set.

Oh, so you don't know the palette-sff rules ?

they an be anyway you want, either shared or unshared.

Sapphire Flame

Hey, so I've coded in a waddle dee helper now, and set it so that it's deployable with a single button (trust me, it'll make sense once I complete him). So, I have 2 questions. How can I make it so that you can only summon one at a time, and how can you make it so that they don't appear by rushing in from the edge of the screen (i.e. they "appear", do their thing, and "disappear")

One at a time is numhelper

You'll need to ID them. Second bit, uhh... buh?

Don't appear from the edge, tell them not to? If it's doing that it's cos you've made it do that. I would hope if you can get a helper TO do that, you'd know how to stop it.

Thanks again. I seem to have an error in my helper code that makes it so that although my character makes the "summon helper" pose, the helper never actually appears. By that, I mean that nothing happens: the helper isn't invisible, it isn't there. Here's my code. StateDef 302 is the helper summon, 20000 is the state of my helper

Fallen_angel

check that the anim has at least 30 ticks (time), or check the position, mayb you are summoning him outside of the screen

Cyanide

That, and your helper may contain 0 time frames in it's animation. It possibly will if you're using fighter factory. It won't if you're using MEE or mcm, or wordpad.
