Can you change the resolution on characters you download or smooth them out so they seem less jagged in there animations? Or are you just stuck with the way they look based off the download?

Yes there is an automatic way, Though the results are usually crap.

Though there is also the more obvious method of editing every single sprite into Hi-Res.

And of course you can always download Hi-Res versions of .SFFs if they exist (and aren't crap).
