I'm refering to the abbreviations used here, other mugen sites, etc.

I'm not asking what they mean; I'm asking where the terminology originated from.

Example: "Who coined "QCF?"

Byakko

:gonk:
Quarter circle forward qcf, quarter circle back qcb, half circle forward hcf, half circle back hcb, dragon punch dp, reverse dragon punch rdp. Who coined it ? Logic and its friend common sense, that's who.
If I struggled to the end of my determination, to the end of my way of life with my followers, if the result is ruin, then this ruin is inevitable. Grieve. Shed tears. But you cannot regret.

Baragon

Never thought of it like that.  --;

That is common sense, but keep in mind I was thinking in terms of "DOWNDOWNRIGHTRIGHT" etc

Byakko

The problem with that is that it changes depending on which side of the screen you're facing, and so does the "Tekken-style" / "Gamefaqs-style" numpad 123 notation. Qcf is universal.

the "Tekken-style" / "Gamefaqs-style" numpad 123 notation. Qcf is universal.

Tekken doesn't use the number pad notation along with the usual button notation. People who post Tekken moves usually use numbers for attacks, not directions (Like F, 1+2, meaning Forward, then Left and right punch together)

Also Tekken doesn't heavily use QCF notation because most of the attacks don't require those. There's Dragon punch styled moves, and a few QCB moves, but aside from that there aren't enough of those for Tekken FAQ's to use QCF commands.
QuoteImagine a zanguief runing to attack ryu, ryu does a quick+kind of weak fast punch and hit the chest of zanguief, will this punch be enough to zanguief say/think \"oh no, this punch hurted a little, I better stop the attack and put my hand on my chest to help contain the pain while ignoring if ryu is going to make other attacks now"

Although numpad style is infinitely more useful for any games that have complicated or precise commands such as Guilty gear or Blazblue. especially with a lot of down right normals being different from crouch. Where c. is not an appropriate tag but 3 is.

You mean DF?

With numerical notations I waste time looking at the numpad to guess what direction means said number, I prefer regular abbreviations.

Personally, Brevity < Readability.

I say this because if it's a crouching move... I generally see "Crouch" used in some fashion, and not "C.".

Back to tekken, I went into a random FAQ to show what the commands were in that particular FAQ. The commands are brief without being cryptic.

f - tap forward
F - hold forward
b - tab back
B - hold back
u - tap up
U - hold up
d - tap down
D - hold down

d/f - tap down and forward
D/F - hold down and forward
d/b - tap down and back
D/B - hold down and back
u/f - tap up and forward
U/F - hold up and forward
u/b - tap down and back
U/B - hold up and back

QCF - quarter circle toward (d,d/f,f)
QCB - quarter circle back(d,d/b,d)
HCF - half circle toward (b,d/b,d,d/f,f)
HCB - half circle back (f,d/f,d,d/b,b)

                       left punch = lp (O)    (O) rp = right punch
                       left kick = lk  (O)    (O) rk = right kick

FC------------> full crouch (must be in full crouching animation)
N------------> no direction pressed on the joystick
WR------------> while running
WS------------> while rising
SS------------> sidestep+ do moves on either side(s) together
~------------> immediately followed by...
=------------> Denotes that move has optional extension
( _ )------------> denotes "or" - used for optional commands
(f-throw)------------> forward throw
(s-throw)------------> side throw
(b-throw)------------> back throw
(g-throw)------------> ground throw
(c-throw)------------> crouch throw
(starter)------------> multi-part starter

Bullshit.

What would you rather read:

2141236236 + LP+HP or QCB, HCF, QCF + LP+HP?

(I believe that's someone's HSDM)

Second one.

Because numpad style is retarded no matter what anyone says.

Siebzehn

I wouldn't say retarded...

Just rather cryptic, as I said before. I mean I don't want to go through the process of decoding what 236 means, I just want to know the motions.

Ok, that's for a relatively not simple move, but put in a basic B&B combo for someone. Heck even a combo into Arakune's corner trap pressure

Using that notation outlined earlier   D, d/f, f, u/f D (cloud type), D/B A, D/B A, D/B A (hold), D/B C (non executed B), cloud, B,  N [A]<B>, F D, D/F D, D/F D, F D,  D/F D, D/F D, u/f, f, B B (hold),  N <B>, F C, N C, D C, ABC, F C, N C, D C. Mix up afterward with B, D/F C. u/f, d A, d B, d C. And F A,N D, Curse combo.

Obviously looking at that we get notations like B B which are more confusing, and in states like the post cloud section there's no indication whether that's the B attack or the direction, no instructions on when you need to land for certain aerial sections etc.

Comparing that to 2369 d (Cloud), 1a, 1a, 1(a), 1c~(b), cloud, 4, 5[a]<B>, 6d, 3d, 3d, 6d, 3d, 3d, 96, 4(b),\/ 5<B>, 6c, 5c, 2c, abc, 6c, 5c, 2c. Mix up afterward with 4, 3c. 92a, 2b, 2c. And 6a, 5d, Curse combo.

Sure on easy things like 214236236.lp+hp there's very little difference between the two, but the more kinds of normals and non traditional commands *Ranging from tiger knees to bizarre Summon Suffering style Ivy commands.* that appear in a piece, the more useful and concise it is to deal with numpad commands, especially in games that have a B or D as buttons as opposed to having them clearly mean directions.

Ugh, the BBS makes release B into bold on here thus why everything is bolded out. Is there an ignore brackets B thing I can use here?

...why are you typing out the full directions? Just the way you TYPED that seemed to almost blatantly TRY to make it look more complicated. Much of that could've been shortened, you randomly switched between capitalizing directions and lowercasing them making it look confusing, and using + helps.

Note: also, usually in most FAQs/Movelists, directions are lowercased while buttons are uppercased.

EDIT: Now I don't play Blazblue or know anything about the commands, but I'm gonna try to simplify this is as much as possible. QCF, uf + D (cloud type), db + A, db + A, db + A (hold), db + C (non executed B), cloud, B,  N + [A]<B>, f + D, df + D, df + D, f + D,  df + D, df + D, uf, f+ B B (hold),  N + <B>, f + C, N + C, d + C, ABC, f + C, N + C, d + C. Mix up afterward with b, df + C. uf, d + A, d + B, d + C. And f + A, N + D, Curse combo.

I fail to see your point as what I just fixed from your post makes it readable and much more preferable rather than trying to guess which numpad keys equate to which direction. I especially don't like it because the numbers are not consistent. If you're on the left side of the screen, a command may be 41236 + P but once you get on the right side it changes to 63214. HCF is universal regardless of what direction you're facing. It tells you which way to go.
