There aren't too many 2D sprite-based fighters on PSN (Xbox Live Arcade is a different story thanks to strong support from SNK Playmore). Recom will be providing some relief for PlayStation 3 combatants through the upcoming Dark Awake.

This 2D team-based fighter appears to be Taito's 2004 Type X fighter Chaos Breaker, operating under its pre-release name. Recom apparently acquired the rights to the game and has decided to bring to to PS3 owners in download form.

Developed by Korean developer Eolith, Dark Awake has a fantasy theme, giving you access to a cast of 22 fighters that includes barbarians, dwarves and trolls. Players form a team from three characters and pick up weapons and items while facing off against an opponent.

The PSN version includes an arcade mode that mathces the arcade version, an online mode with ranking and friend match options, and a practice mode that lets you practice as your favorite character. Recom is also equipping the game with voice chat, Trophies, and the ability to directly register people you've fought as your friends.

Dark Awake will see PSN release this Summer at ¥2000.

Update, a bit more info ...about the Arcadeversion at least
Chaos Breaker is a 2D fighting game where a player selects three characters to form the team they will use while they are playing the game. Players also collect items, and can swap characters and items as they advance through each level. Characters can be selected from a choice of six different races including human, dark elf, elf, ork, dwarf and undead. Items that a player collects range from healing potions, hammers, spikes, power bracelets, demon clubs, magical scrolls, spears, protection rings, ice blades, magical and holy defense shields, blessing staffs, blessing bows, invisible cloaks, runic axes, wind boots, death staffs, lucky coins, protective talismans, life absorption swords and hellfire swords. Chaos Breaker runs on Taito's Type X architecture.

This game looks like it got stuck in some kind of time warp.  The whole presentation looks like something from the 90s.

The graphics are actually rather good, but you can't tell much from those 2 shots.

In M.U.G.E.N there is no magic button

They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it's not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.

sorry, they were the only screenshots i found so far.  i guess its something in the capcom vs snk 2, kof Xi "graphical" league. but if the gameplay is good..the music too i wont care really even if the graphics would be pure 16bit standart. 22 fantasy genre characters are already a nice feature in my eyes. lets hope not half of em are clones from each other

update
found some more infos and screens.. first post updated

I wonder if the PS3/360 version will have updated music.
The actual arcade title just used MIDI files and shit was kinda' sad.
They could at least soundfont it with SGM-v2.01, and that's shit's free.

Finally, some PSN exclusive fighter, It looks pretty nice, so no complaints.
I hope they fix those retarded infinites though, and that they polish the sprites up a bit (like MvC2)

Yeah as stupid as SNK is, they are forgetting their biggest fanbase  :-\

i suppose their neogeo ports for the ps2 didnt sell good in japan where they all had online mathes support, i dont see any other reason why snk didnt port the most neogeo fighters to psx, xblive yet
