DOA5 in the works?

Happened upon this article. It's only a couple of days old, so I think it's still postable.

According to a scan of the "Rumour Machine" section of the latest UK Official PlayStation Magazine found on Playstation Lifestyle, Tecmo's flagship fighting franchise, Dead or Alive, could be set for a return for the first time since Tomonobu Itagaki's departure -- and this time, it'll be on PS3. The magazine, which also rehashes some old rumors, claims that Dead or Alive 5 is "in production for PS3," something that doesn't necessarily rule out an Xbox 360 release (a PlayStation magazine would simply have no reason to mention that).

It seems does likely that Team Ninja would want to develop a new DOA. After all, that's the perfect showcase for the studio's latest Jiggle Tech® -- now in triple-D.

The most recent Dead or Alive game to be announced will also be on a Sony platform: the beach minigame collection, DOA Paradise, which is coming to PSP this spring. Maybe now that Itagaki's out, Tecmo can pursue whatever interest it must have had in publishing DOA on PlayStation -- something that hasn't happened since the Xbox was released.

Hmmm..... Well, I can't say that these rumours are completely unbased, given their plans for DOA paradise. But until I see sceenshots, I'm not convinced. Fans of course, are gonna fap to this, but since I've been spoilt by better fighting games, I think I might just shrug my shoulders on this one....

DOA5 on PS3 is a rumor for now, yeah. One nicely founded rumor for now.

Anyways, I couldn't care less about the fanservice... That is, as long as they keep implementing the best stages that a 3D fighter has seen (Because let's face it, since DOA2, that's one of the series's strongest points... other than boob jiggling, I mean)

They'll probably add Momiji and maybe Rachel. Raidou should come back, somehow.

Can't how they'd could do that, since both Momiji and Rachael started off as being weapon based. I mean, what fighting styles would you give them? As far as bosses are concerned, you'll probably find your boss character being some half-baked Kasumi clone that kills you in ten seconds and has you swearing death threats to your TV(like say...... the last one)

If this is really happening, there's four things I'd like to see. Firstly, some balance between faster and slower characters. Second, punish button mashers. tThird, make throws a little more lucrative. Maybe some customisation options aswell. If it worked well for Tekken and SC, DOA should blitz it if done properly. (and by properly, I mean something other than different swimsuit colours)

Fair enough, even though Ryu was weapon based as well (back when DOA debuted)
They'll work something out.

That or a boss battle with a confusing camera angle (Omega)... Which is better than Alpha-152 or whatever.
Bosses are getting worse, I agree, hopefully this will be the exception.

QuoteSecond, punish button mashers.
Pretty sure they're punished by the counters (AND counter mashers are punished by a longer counter recovery and taking double damage during a counter whiff animation, also counters not just being limited to high and low, but also medium counters. Granted, there's always room for improvement.

QuotetThird, make throws a little more lucrative.
I strongly agree with this one though, throws are hard to land, you barely have time to connect one during your opponent's whiffed counter.
(Half or my mains are throw based, Tina, Bass, Leon and Bayman, so...)

QuoteMaybe some customisation options aswell. If it worked well for Tekken and SC, DOA should blitz it if done properly. (and by properly, I mean something other than different swimsuit colours)
I hated SC4's customization. Tekken 6's is slighlty more refined (Maybe because you know you're just dressing your character of choice instead of "creating" a new character... Which ends up being a lame skin for a preexisting character)
It would be a nice extra, but I could definitely live without it.

The thing that annoyed me about the throws in DOA4, was that they didn't connect when you stunned your opponent in a counter state when it really should've, thus forcing you to hammer in attack buttons.

As far as customisation's concerned, I happen to like it in 3D fighting games, but then that's just me. If they don't take that option, they should definately up the costume number(especially if it's an exclusive PS3 game) I dunno about you, but going from a character having 20 costumes max in DOA2 ultimate, to only 8 in DOA4 kinda felt like a slap in the face for me.

Agreed on both accounts.
No grabs during hit stun really limits the strategies with grapplers. You end up relying on baiting counters.

And yeah, when it came to presentation, DOA2 Ultimate was amazing (Then again, they put extra effort on it, being a remake of DOA2 Hardcore and all... They went an extra mile with the stages and costumes)

Prodigy_LXM

Me being the most hardcore DOA fan......they better impress the hell outta me. I mean new characters with cool fighting styles......no more ninjas. The 4 we have now are cool enough. And a better storyline for the joke characters i.e. everyone besides the ninjas, helena, christie, and bayman..
I'm trying. . .

I haven't played a DOA game since DOA 2 hardcore on the ps2! I'm glad it on the ps3 instead of being Xbox360 only (no offense they are a lot better on the PS3 than on the Xbox 360!) !

To be honest they were better without Itagaki so Team Ninja can make a game on any platform they want even the PS3!

Alhambra

Now that Itagaki is off the team, is anyone else hoping for an altered art direction in the next installment? I would love a change from the plastic barbie look. Also, I think it'd be great if they did end up doing character customization. It just feels like a standard at this point.

Bastard Mami

DOA paradise has the same design and I would rather have doa5 keep that, otehrwise it would look too much like sega/namco's offering and the uniqueness would be limited to the gameplay, especially now hat sega and namco have added jiggle.

Duo Solo

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. Ever since Itagaki left due to his so-called "Rockstar attitude", I wonder what will happen to the series now?
I agree with the above, grabs were hard to perform in DOA4, along with that Kasumi clone and the final boss in DOA3 (its weird camera made the fight difficult.) I really like the idea of adding Rachel and Momiji.

As for the PS3 rumor goes, maybe DOA will be a release kind of like the Ninja Gaiden series first appears on Xbox before it appears on the PS3. Im hoping this is true.

As long they don't focus on fan service too much. It's OK to have some but so much that you forget every thing else!

SuperSaiyanAnthony

I can't wait for Dead or Alive 5 is coming soon! I will buy ps3 slim  ;D

Hmmm...... No offense, but I say that we'll see a BB character for mugen before we see any DOA5 screens.

Shunu

I love DOA soundtrack ;D well lets wait and see what happends! (of course doa's game play is pretty fun! with those difficult special moves lol)

"Bad News" Hoffmann

If there will be a DOA 5 then i hope it will get some guest characters from KOEI`s DW series.

rednavi -RETIRED

This reminds me that DOA Online was released :P, I assume no one tried it.

And yeah, DOA sountrack is usually awesome.

Bastard Mami

rio is pretty much confirmed as a playable character in doaP, since shots wihther in gravure and wearing different swimsuits have surfaced.

Metroid Budgie

DoA is like avatar - be a huge spectacle with tons of explosions and nobody will care that you don't have a lot of depth.

...kinda the other way. have a lot of effort and graphical things and people forget the depth you have.

Best stages so far in a fighting game. =p
