Enter the Dragon - The Game (Beta)

This game is based on the Bruce Lee movie ENTER THE DRAGON.  This is a beta version.  The person helping me with the stages, and making the cop character has been away from MUGEN for 8 months, so I decided to release the game as-is.

Many original things were created for this game:
Bruce Lee with nunchuck mode and new hair and outfit palette, and fatalities.
Sidescrolling level engine
O'Hara sprites (based on Takuma)
Mr. Han sprites and moves (based on Elias)
Karate Guys trainer
Mr. Williams sprites (afro frankenspriting!)

To perform Bruce Lee's fatality against all players:  D, DB, B and jab punch
To perform Bruce Lee's fatality against Mr. Han:  D, DB, B and jab kick

This game was created in honor of Bruce Lee and for fans of his movies.  I probably will not be updating it for some time.  If anyone wants to add to this game, you have my permission.

:) I know this is your first game made and all but I think u should spend more time with your work and be more creative. I think your game should be in the edit section of the forum. Also u should work on making your own sprite animation and your own character art style. This way people wont criticize your work as a edit complication game or a rip-off. The main title screen is nice touch. Some of the sound for the character is ok but need more work. Also try not use other creator materials like stage or life bar bcuz they don't really match up with base on the movie or game its self. But over all is nice Idea and I did try your game but is just that does not feel like the real thing.  :) I hope in the future your game become more fun and Original  ;)

Different sparksets, clashing spritestyles (wtf SFZ3 vs CvS vs KoF?), stolen lifebars from Samurai Shodown, stolen stages, misaligned portraits... this looks like a crappy compilation everyone can slap in 10'. Better release whatever you edited separately and let people put it together. :P

This wuz me. :P

And this was what I said in the vid comments in reply to the negativity:
I challenge you to go and find the elements needed to 'compile' this game. Bruce Lee with nunchucks, alt outfit, fatalities? Made for this game. Sidescrolling beat 'em up MUGEN levels? Made for this game. O'Hara, Mr. Han and Williams sprites? Made for this game. Etc etc. Yes, there are a couple of characters that only had some audio voice changes, but they were used because they match the characters from the movie. This game is for fans of the movie.

Bottomline:  I made this game for fans of the movie.  There's enough original content in there to qualify it as a new release.  If you don't like it, don't play it.  I've gotten a lot of nice emails from people who really enjoy the game and are Bruce Lee/Enter the Dragon fans.  They are who I made this game for.  I'm not looking for constructive criticism or feedback, as I stated I probably will not be updating this.  It is what it is, so love it or hate it.  Peace.

This would have been better mentioned in the first post, with the topic locked afterwards. I'm an Enter the Dragon fan myself, and frankly, the sprites here look really bad, like you plastered an afro over some sprites and changed some pals. :( Most stuff here does look like kind of a shoddy job. Not hating, but you can't open a topic and expect people not to give opinions. Peace.

Thanks ZombieBrock!  Glad you enjoyed it.

Lasombra, I didn't open a topic per se, this is just a release.  I.E., this is where I'm announcing the game is available and the link to download it for those who wish to do so.  Sorry you don't like the Mr. Williams afro sprites.  Short of somehow drawing him from scratch, frame by frame, how would you suggest creating the character from the available sprite data-base?

+ =

It's supposed to be Mr. Williams
I used Mr. Jones afro on Takuma's body.  Took hours and hours to frankensprite.   If you have a better suggestion, I'd definitely be open to hearing it.

So you are open to constructive criticism? I'm actually happy on this one! :D

Unfortunately, I'm not an expert spriter myself (people like Rolento, Felo, Walt and the others can help you out on that, I'ld recommend you start a topic @ Graphic Arts), but I can give some advice on some stuff.
For instance: screenpack looks kinda messy. Text overlapping the central image in main title screen kinda looks bad, you might want to move the image to one side and the text to the other. Big and small portraits need to be in the same style (O'Hara's small portrait is bugged). Samsho lifebars make no sense, since the setting isn't japanese, but chinese. Regarding coding, some of the more obvious stuff: Bruce's fatal move makes him float in the air. He even doesn't land on the guy's ribs, but on his feet.

First stage shown on video is nice... except for the heads of the monks in first plane; massive sprite style clash. And this is a big one. Sprite clash makes this whole project look more like a crappy compilation than a real fullgame. Try finding bases from the same game for everything- I count an SNK char, a CvS one, an AoF3 one, an AoF2 one (yes, AoF1/2 and 3 have radically different shading and proportions), a SFZ3 one, a GMOTW one, a Matrimelee one, a Real Bout one, some SF3 sprites in there too... and stages, man oh man.
From the video: SFZ3 heavily edited (nice, except for monks' photo heads), AoF2, a random photo of a golf court (how can you expect to be taken seriosly if you put this kinda stuff?), some samsho stages, a seriously clash between photo and drawing for the base during your long run of bad guys...

Most fullgames have a nice feel to it because they're done in the same style. Not just in gameplay (not the case here...), but also in sprites. This is very important.

Hah, I always open to constructive criticism!  But I just wanted to warn people ahead of time that I'm releasing this as-is and probably not going to do more work on it, so don't waste time asking for changes.

As I said in my first post, the person who was helping me on this hasn't been able to work on it for 8 months, and who knows if or when he'll be able to finish.  He did that first stage, and was working on converting the other ones.  Also, he was making a cop character, so the Edi. E. I made is a place holder.  As is the golf course 'photo'.

As for the clashing sprite bases --- this IS Mugen you know.  There is no way to find characters that resemble the actors in the movie from just one sprite base.  KOF has the good karate uniforms.  Capcom has Fei-Long, etc etc.  If this were Street Fighter Alpha 4 I would agree with you.  But this is a game that is meant to be fun to play, and an homage to a movie.  I don't think most people care about the sprite bases or hit sparks etc.  And frankly, if Enter the Dragon is about all these different styles of martial arts coming together in a tournament, then I think it's fitting to bring in different styles of art (within reason of course).

Same goes for the Samurai Shodown life bars.  The bad guys in Enter the Dragon aren't using kung fu, but karate (the majority of the guards and O'Hara).  So why not use Asian themed life bars?  Fits the motif and visual feel just fine.

Don't become so anal about MUGEN that you lose sight of the larger picture -- the casual gamer plays games to have fun, not to pat themselves on the back because they can name each and every sprite and what game it came from.  I have to ask, have you actually downloaded the came and played it through from start to finish?  Would you look at a meal sitting on a table and criticize it because the napkin rings clash with the glasses, without having actually tasted the food?

In my book, the essence of a fullgame is that stuff is cohesive, and this lacks it. This actually fits more into compilation criteria (and a clashing one, at best - Rednavi's Warusaki compilation is way more integral than this; heck, most MK compilations are).

I don't think most people care about the sprite bases or hit sparks etc.
Paying attention to really basic stuff like hitsparks, lifebars, basic gameplay standarization and sprite bases isn't being anal. Just like putting a single layer photo from a golf course as a stage in your fullgame isn't 'casual'. It's plain undeniable bad quality. That's all I'm saying. Ask any real creator around here, check the quality fullgames out there. They paid attention to this stuff. Of course a ton people will say 'NICE CAR +1!', but if you wanna improve, those aren't the only voices you should listen to.

Edit: After extensive checking, I decided to add some extra stuff.

First impression after unzipping:
-Shoddy workfile handling: You've left a "New Folder (5)" in there. Your old workfiles. Shouldn't be there. Docs and Tools folder also bundled. Tons of unneeded files. PCXs and JPGs all over the place. What for?
-Bundling Winmugen: You are breaking the license agreement on MUGEN. You can't bundle it with licensed material (no matter if it was modified). This is the kinda stuff that might get Elecbyte sued if the IP owners find out (unlikely, though).

Running the "fullgame":
WTF is the options screen @ screenpack? No storyboard intro for any char. No standard portrait size, laughable Bruce Lee portrait.
Gameplay: Completely unfitting characters. As I said, they aren't just different in spritestyle, it seems you hardly edited anything but Bruce Lee's 'Look I have nunchuck but no specials!' mode. That means Han (Elias) still has RotD style combos and specials, Roper (Ryo) still has dodge and roll, etc. Some chars are 4 button, some are 6 button. There is no planning to this chaos or ludicrous system variety randomness a la MvC2 (where everything is so unbalanced it works). Just sloppiness. This looks bad and feels lazily put together.

A fullgame has same system mechanics going for all characters, a sense of balance, and a sense of sprite similarities. This lacks all. A good compilation has nice characters which fit well because they have similar power levels or gameplay style (see: balance). This lacks that. I'ld just qualify this as a bad asian-themed compilation, with some very little randomly edited stuff. :(

Want honest advice? Ditch the content you didn't edit, complete it, release it separately.

Well now I do appreciate you taking the time to give a comprehensive feedback.  However, I did mention that I probably won't be doing a revision to this game (especially since my partner can't finish his end of it), so it's unlikely I would make these corrections.

Now, I see the golf course level is bugging you.  There's a scene in Enter the Dragon where Roper fights some guys on golf course during his intro.  I looked all over and couldn't find a golf course level, so I used Cybaster's stage making tool and found a photo that best worked for scale.  Without my guy who was designing the stages, that's the best it's gonna be unfortunately.

I was holding on to this game for months, waiting to release it until it was totally finished.  I've had people asking me to release it, or wanting specific characters.   And then I read about someone who had a HD crash and lost everything, and didn't have the heart to re-start a game they were making.  That made me realize that I should just release the game as-is.

'Cause the thing you're still missing is that if you select Bruce and play through the whole game till the end, it's damn fun to play and re-create your favorite moments from the film.  Some people will dig it and appreciate it, and as I said up front, that is who I made this for.

Again though, thank you for taking the time and effort to give feedback and constructive criticism.  Who knows, maybe someone else will want to take this game and improve on it based on your suggestions.

Thank you, Count Monte, for bringing a movie-based Bruce Lee MUGEN game to us!  With your selection of backgrounds and BGMs, it really gives a movie-like experience!  I like the Karate Guys very much!  It depicts Lee's "one man fights all" scene very much!   :afro:

Hey Werewood, thanks man!  Means a lot to me.

Btw, I keep checking all the time hoping you'll make Green and Zoma from Golden Axe: Duel!  I know they're a bitch to make, I did rip some of their sprites for an OpenBOR game -- not all of them, but PM me if you're interested and I'll send you what I have.

I think that Count Monte will remake the game and fix the minor set back on the game and make even more fun to play :)
:D I like see how far he gonna go with it. I know they are real sprite for the Bruce lee character from the Sega CD or super Nintendo or the Atari jaguar. he can use those for the animation for it :)
and make it fun :)
