...So there's a character released that is apparently 'Hi-Res only'.

Now, if one were to try and use such a character on 'standard' MUGEN...what would happen?

I don't see what could be so different that characters can't work on either.  Explain?  What are the differences?

I think we should make a topic about that to explain once and for all the differences between low res mugen and high res mugen.

So, let's start the explanation :
- Any version of Mugen (DOS, Linux and Win) can use high-res characters and high-res lifebars. All you need to do to display them in high-res is to set doubleres=4 in the mugen.cfg file of the data folder.
When a character is labelled as "High-Res only", it means that the character has sprites as GGXX ones, or many effects which are high-res. Hence, they work perfectly even if you set doubleres to 2 for example, but they look much better with doubleres = 4.

It becomes more tricky with high-res stages and high-res screenpacks. The various High-res Winmugen versions are all hacks which provide different "features" :
  • The 1st one can display high-res stages, but only low-res screenpacks.
  • The 2nd version (which most people use) can display high-res stages and high-res screenpacks.
  • The 3rd hack was made by KFM, and can display high-res screenpacks, but only low-res stages. It was made because there are really a lot of very good low-res stages, and you may want to use them with an appealing screenpack.

A few notes :
  • If using one of the high-res hacks, the doubleres parameter becomes useless. Whatever the value you set it to, it will be considered as doubleres=4.
  • You cannot mix high-res and low-res stages in the same Mugen. Either you use only low-res stages, either you use only high-res. Displaying low-res stages in a version made to display high-res ones (and vice versa) will only result in graphical awfulness.

....Waitaminute.

Doubleres=4?

The thing says it goes from 1 to 3.  Wouldn't 4 do nothing?

Not that the others work for me anyway....

Doubleres=4 is a hidden feature.  As with all doubleres modes, you must have your screen size set to at least 640x480.

Yes, that is the reason (reason for me..)because H-res suck...the stage issue...maybe one day will be a Mugen that work fine with both...
-I hate haters and S.o.S chars.....
    -time to migrate from winmugen...

In May 2007, a hacked version of WinM.U.G.E.N was released by a third party that added support for high resolution stages (like those seen in Guilty Gear X) at the cost of losing support to standard resolution M.U.G.E.N stages. Later that month, another hack was done to add support for high-res select screens. In July 2007 another hack created by Sion and Kung Fu Man based on the last high-res hack allowed for only the select screen to be high-res and not the stages. In December 2007, a hack from an anonymous source allowed both low-res and hi-res stages to be functional in the same build, requiring only a single line of code to be added to hi-res stages. from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.U.G.E.N Is this true?

I have tried both the low and hi resolution.  However, when put hi-resolution characters into standard Mugen, it becomes lo-resolution characters.  I don't see the point, though.  Hi-resolution characters are still very few and they are not very good.
