Part 5 was my favorite. Loved Bucciaratti's arc so much and the titular protagonist being a descendant of Dio's was a welcome change in terms of character design. The exaggerated Italian fashion & locales were quite nice as well,  I thought it was a really enjoyable read.

Admittedly, I skipped part 4 after a couple chapters, and I haven't read Stone Ocean or Steel Ball Run. Are they worth checking out or should I just focus on Part 8 now?

nah, you only lover part 5 because you ahd just gone thru part 4, I know because the same happened to me.

^ Well, um no actually. Like I said before I never completed part 4 beyond the first few bits. I couldn't stick with it and jumped ship onto Part 5 initially based on the more provoking character designs & fell in love with Vento Aureo instead. I would've noticed if you were privy to my reading methods, my room's not that big...

Has anyone else here besides read Parts 1 & 2 for shits and giggles?

So far as I can tell Araki was always OK with story stuff before he started getting good, but he has indeed gotten a hell of a lot better at art.

When the hell did this happen?
One of the early chapters, maybe when Josuke fights Angelo or Chili Pepper, I'm not sure.

Part 5 is pretty good:

+ Polnareff
+ Both Bucciaratti and Giorno feel like main characters
+ Things are FABULOUS
+ Interesting new stands

- Crippled Polnareff
- The antagonist wasn't very charismatic and he wasn't very developed
-  King Crimson's confusing as hell Stand ability

Part 2
for shits and giggles?
Get out.
Part 2 is magnificent and young Joseph is one of the most empathic Joestars EVER.

Parts 1-3 are easily the best, after that JoJo began to slowly slide downhill. Four was bleh aside from Kira who I like as a villlain, Vento Aureo has a cool story and some interesting characters, but the ending felt anticlimatic...yet nothing compared to Stone Ocean's in terms of awfulness.

I refuse to acknowledge Steel Ball Run and JoJolion.

I think the first one beats all of them in terms of manliness.

Seriously.

Also Part 2 was pretty awesome. Joseph made the Ripple look awesome. Caesar made it look classy as heck.

Sucks to be you. SBR has gorgeous artwork and amazing main characters (Gyro might not be a Joestar but he's almost as awesome as young Joseph)

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm still following both parts outta curiosity. And in hopes of finding redeeming factors.

...Although Velociraptor Dio pretty much killed SBR for me.

It's too early to judge jojolion, fuck's wrong with you.

Forgot to mention that Gold Experience was a deus ex machina.

"Remember when we said it did this? BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE! IT CAN ALSO DO THIS!"

Started reading Steel Ball Run thanks to this thread popping up. They're not even at the first checkpoint yet and I'm really enjoying the story so far. Another very unique cast of characters to boot. Araki could make a manga about bookkeeping interesting.

I don't even know if GER is a + or -
It's surprisingly broken and makes for a both awesome and awkward way to defeat Diavolo.

Also yeah, it's way way waaaaaaay too early to judge Jojolion. The first three chapters have been interesting.

Is it bad that I only know of the series because of the fighting game?

It wasn't the only broken stand in part 5 though. The one that had those viral capsules on his fists that corroded flesh was written out of the final conflict when the team came to a crossroads. I'm guessing the motivation for his leaving the story was to add more tension to the finale, otherwise that fight would've ended quick if a stand with that kind of power were involved.

I know Araki removed Fuugo and Purple Haze from the story because he was "too broken" (Still, one of the things he does so well is how he handles fights and how power levels usually don't matter)

Speaking of broken part 5 Stands, there's Notorious B.I.G...

I said shits and giggles because as awesome as Joseph and part 2 are, the art was awkward as fuck for a good long time. There is no denying this, S.D., and you know it.

Even if Diavolo was pretty shittily developed, his death is probably one of the nastiest ways a Jojo baddie has gone out, next to getting your ass beaten by a prepubescent kid and written out of existence on top of that.

Oh but I deny it.
Especially after reading Araki's early works like Cool Shock B.T., BAOH and Gorgeous Irene.

Diavolo and Pucci had pretty much the same death, in a sense.

What about Kira? That was a plain sad way to be defeated.
