La Femme Nikita was a television series based on a movie, Point of no Return (1993), which was a remake of a French movie, Nikita (1990),
The 2010 Nikita series is based on the three predecessors above; to what extent, I don't know.
I got into this whole Nikita thing because I kept seeing advertisement for the Nikita series but I don't want to start on it and become really lost for not seeing the previous sources.


My question is how necessary is it for me to watch La Femme Nikita in order to watch and understand Nikita?

Never seen the old ones, but the newer series is stand-alone. Watch it from the start, and you won't be lost.

I looked at wikia to see something about Nikita and it seems they're going to get around to retelling her history at the Division, clarifying that the stories are different.

You could watch the very first Nikita movie just to see where the inspiration for the series comes from (and because it's a good movie), but in the end it's not an obligatory step since the series is a standalone.
