So, as I finish up some stuff for the SHADEs 2 beta, I've decided I need to take a step away from it for a little bit so I don't get burned out. I've been working on it for a long time, and all that's left to do to completely finish the game is to make the intro and character endings. While I work on that stuff in the free time I have away from the computer (drawing the endings and such), I will also be working on my favorite Final Fantasy lead character, Squall. I know a lot of people don't like him, and upon revisiting the game recently I realized he is pretty whiny, but I still love FF8 and Squall so I've decided I want to make him for Mugen. Here is the first sprite for him:




As far as bases go, his animations will be coming from several different characters, but mostly they will come from Hayato, K', and Kaede. Now, normally I would not post a topic like this so early since I've just begun him, but I'd like help and suggestions on his moveset. I would like him to play like a traditional fighting game character, so nothing too high-concept or strange. Right now, his planned moveset looks like this (commands won't be listed since I usually don't finalize those until well into creation):

Special Moves:

Fire/Fira/Firaga - Squall casts a fire spell. I'm not sure exactly how this will work at this point. He may have a limited number of spells, and when they're gone he will have to draw some from his enemy. I'd like to incorporate drawing into his gameplay, but I can't really think of a fair, balanced way for him to draw that is accurate to the game (i.e., a grab would be balanced, but inaccurate tot he way he does it in the game, on the other hand, being able to do it from any distance sounds like it would be cheap and spammable). The actual spell itself will probably be cast at a specified distance in front of him. I'm trying to think of a good comparison to use to describe what I mean by that, but I'm having a hard time. If anyone has played as Kalumon and Theedge's Jess character, imagine the spell working like his Orb attack. If anyone can think of a more universal/easily recognizable example, please feel free to elaborate so that those who haven't played that character can understand better.

Rough Divide - Squall does an uppercut with his sword. Basically his anti-air and will likely have a DP motion. This is his first limit break from FF8.

Fated Circle - Squall performs a spinning horizontal slash in mid-air that sends out a thin wave of energy. The range will probably be about half-screen.

Gunblade Slash - Squall dashes forward and slashes with his Gunblade. Similar to the way it works in FF8, if you press the attack button again right when the blade hits, he'll pull the trigger, doing extra damage.

Super Moves:

Blasting Zone - Squall holds up his sword vertically above his head and creates a massive pillar of magic energy. He then brings it down on his opponent's head. Think Captain Commando's Captain Sword.

Lion Heart - Squall unleashes a barrage of sword attacks, knocks the opponent into the air where he continues the assault, before finishing with an insanely fast diagonal slash that he enhances with an explosion from the Gunblade.

Anyway, let me know what you guys think, and I'll be providing constant updates here throughout his creation.

Also, if anyone can provide me with some good FX for the character, please do. I know some people around here are great at creating FX, or just ripping them from FF8, and I'm not good at/able to do either of those things. I would greatly appreciate it and you would be credited of course.

I always thought Squall (and Cloud)'s limit breaks would make a great moveset for a fighting game.

Interesting...  Could consider some of his Dissidia gameplay as well; he's one of the more rounded characters in that, and it also serves as a good visuals upgrade.

Btw, Squalls not really whiny or at least completely out of Tidus's league. It's mostly all in his internal monologue. Besides aren't we all whiny bitches inside our heads? :P

About time!  Still hoping Snake gets a sprite update.

As far as Supers go, in my mind I picture Firaga as a Lv.3 Hyper, only one hit on impact, and its velocity to be very fast.  As for Fire, 1%'s Izanagi has a bar guage that reduces whenever the character's special move is use and prevents usage upon reaching the end.  It fills up overtime.  Maybe that could work?

I know this may be difficult task to do but GFs would be a nice addition to the character, I mean they were a huge part of the game itself. If I could make a suggestion I would like to see Doomtrain because he was the coolest GF to me.
Also a suggestion for another hyper move is Renzukoken, you could make it so it's  a rush type of hyper move. I understand that it is similar to Lion heart but it is Squall's signature move.
Anyway, good luck with the project

If I did do a GF, it would probably be Ifrit since that's the first one you go after (not counting who you have at the start), and to go along with him having Fire as his Magic spells. Ifrit seems like he'd be hard to sprite though. Doomtrain would be much easier to sprite since all I'd really have to draw is one sprite with rotating wheels and some other FX effects. Hmmm.

I would do this, but it wouldn't really match up with the way they work in FF8. In all honesty, this will probably end up being the way I implement it though, since nothing else I can think of would work fairly or properly. As far as the l3 thing goes, I could make his Magic special Fire/Fira, and the Super version Firaga. That would make sense.

Also someone bought up that you could just make the fire spell work like how he used it in Kingdom Hearts. A bit of build up before he can cast it.

... as dish said i personally think you shouldn't have the draw system and just have the fire spell be a basic projectile attack.
i know you got big plans but it will probably be a pain but its your character so do what you want i can't wait to see the outcome.

I only finished the 1st CD of FFVIII, and this was a long time ago, so I won't really be able to help you with idea engineering.
I'm looking forward to this WIP, since all your previous chars were a success, and those based on existing characters (Snake, Rorschach) were great. :)

You could also look at Kingdom Hearts I/II to see if there's anything there that you can put to Squall, since he also appears in those games.

Despite my current personal objections to the Final Fantasy series and Square-Enix as a whole, this char brings back memories of the good old days and I'm actually looking forward to it.

Just an idea for his supers, maybe have him do some kind of super chaining akin to his Limit Breaks in FF8? (ie: Renzokukan chained into his other Limit Breaks on successful hit inputs iirc, I havent touched FF8 in ages.)
