AI image generating for making portraits?

I've been into MUGEN for a long time, and like some other people, I mostly put several characters from different fighting games.
and when I do, I make custom portraits to fit in the screenpack - two for each, for select screen, and victory screen.
The thing is, some characters from old fighting games, doesn't have any good artworks to use. Recently I saw some people use AI tools for making stages, and I thought I could use them for making portraits. But I'm kinda new for these and I don't know which one could be useful. More specifically, I wonder AI tools can make game sprites into art-like thing.
Has anyone tried this? any recommendations?
