The supposed leak
Honestly feels like a fake leak intended to bait outrage. Some of these are reasonable things, but reasonable things that wouldn't be hard to "predict".
Spoiler: My take on each point (click to see content)
- Injustice was one of the earliest examples of "What if Superman was evil?" trend that got old real quick. It wouldn't surprise me if they got back to a more standard DC universe in a fighting game and got rid of Injustice. If its true, good riddance, that story was a mess.
- "No politics" is the part that is intended to bait outrage. WB's higher ups are soulless shitheads, but they also should know enough about PR to understand that having some representation would be good PR and if any insider leaked evidence of them going "no politics" in the development of any game just to not include queer people, they would be completely fucked.
- This is honestly a very basic guess, Quan Chi is fairly popular and people really wanted Ermac and Reptile back due to their absence in MK11, not different from Baraka in MKX, Mileena during most of MK11 or Rain during both MKX and most of MK11. 3D era characters returning is also basically a given too. The mainstays returning is where the leak gets very iffy, if this is a pre-trilogy story like the next point suggests, we could see the ones mentioned in said point, but how would characters like Liu Kang, Kano, Sonya, Johnny, Jax, Mileena and any Cyborg come back? Hell, Ermac, much like Mileena, is shown to have been a fairly recent creation of Shang Tsung, how would he be here? More about this in the next point.
- The Great Kung Lao is shown in one of the endings and its really the most likely ending to get a followup, since everything is fucked in the other one. The Scorpion and Sub-Zero things would make some sense too. This would somewhat justify Liu Kang showing up as Fire God Liu Kang. Edenian characters are old as fuck, so they could show up, but again, there are the ones listed above who are mainstays and would be absent unless there is some insane explanation for them.
- Stage Fatalities being back... okay, I guess.
- No Friendships was a thing at first in MK11 too.
- I honestly don't see how would things get more violence than what we have. MKX and MK11 are all violence and much less style, that why the fatalities are much less memorable.
- Customization being out would not surprise me as it wasn't well received because... honestly, it had some really shitty aspects to it.
- Specific fatalities wouldn't surprise me, but here is where it clashes with the idea of this game being pre-trilogy once again: the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero started with Hanzo and Bi Han. If the characters in this MK game are ancestors to them, why would they have character-specific fatalities? There is nothing happening between them at this point.
- The provocative looks thing sounds just as reliable as the "no politics" part of the leak, too much of a specific problematic thing. Not to mention that it would be much more obvious to the playerbase than the "no politics" thing, as many people wouldn't notice the absence of LBGTQ+ characters, but everyone would see the return of horny costumes.
- More detail in a game never surprises me, so this certainly wouldn't, hell, I'd say its guaranteed. I doubt NRS/WB would respond to the relatively small backlash that they received for causing PTSD on their devs by making them watch detailed situations of harm so they can add it to the game, even though its not really necessary.
It honestly feels more like a bunch of safe bets than any actual info on the game. Like, yeah, I can also expect Great Kung Lao and ancestors of Scorpion and Sub-Zero to show up, I could throw in that Siro and Taja from MK Conquest would show up too as replacements for Sonya and Johnny. Its a relatively safe bet, but I wouldn't call it a leak. Not to mention that, like I said, saying "no politics and specifically mentioning provocative designs for female characters seems way too much like bait. Also, some things straight up clash with one another, like "many mainstays will return" when so many mainstays simply can't be there.
Also, it seems that Ed Boon heard the noise of people talking about NRS's next fighting game and made a poll that ended up trending. He asked if we wanted to see Injustice 3, a Marvel game, Marvel VS DC or the next Mortal Kombat and made Marvel VS DC go viral on Twitter.
