Pretty weird process they have going on there. I think Styleos should contact Diepod for a few tips on how to improve his process :P

err.. why? styleos is a professional who has been doing spriting for years/decades, he is bound by productivity rules and Idon't see anything wrong with his method (or what can be implied of his method based on screenshots).

He has far more professional merits than most, not really someone i would say needs diepod giving them hints.

I mean holy shit, his sprites and animation are gorgeous.

It does look odd that he starts wip animations with flat colors rather lines. I never even considered that, but the results show his methods are sound.

You're saying this like I don't know what I'm talking about ... I've known who Styleos is for years.

My comment assumed he was basing off of lineart, which I picked up from the female characters (the proportions look pretty well thought out). Although on a second look on Azure's screenshot, I think he's actually working full pixel all the way (see the thick lines hinting at folds on his pants).

Anyway, Diepod's method is actually pretty damn good. By the time you're done with the lineart at a larger scale, shrinking down actually leaves you with pretty decent outlines. Hinting simple shadows on a grayscale, and repalette later is a pretty damn good streamlined method.

Although like [E] says, there might be more beneath the surface than what meets the eye, as he's been doing this for years.

The non lineart method ( I havent seen the video cuz its blocked at work  but the description reminds me of the blotch method ) is a animation method for animating in large batches. The ammount of work that styleos puts out is enormous, he has probably gone over several methods before settling on the one that's faster for him.

It is probably a quicker method as well than doing the line art 1st. So the programmers can get the placeholder sprites ASAP and get to coding while he refines them later. And for aesthetics like color positioning it could be useful too. Line art method wouldn't let you take advantage of contrasting weight colors for certain effects. Not that I know they are thinking that deeply on it but you never know =p

Normally I wouldn't bump a topic unless I had some serious info here but good news for Indiegogo backers

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/yatagarasu-attack-on-cataclysm/x/4330726#activity

Said announcement said:
Yatagarasu Attack on Cataclysm Level Up Tournaments and Alpha Access Start This Week!

Starting this Thursday (August 21st) and running through December 18th, Yatagarasu Attack on Cataclysm will stream every Thursday in the 2014 summer and fall tournament seasons of the premier fighting game promoter Level Up’s “The Runback!” show which streams from the New Super Arcade in Walnut, California.

This is a great opportunity see the latest Yatagarasu AoC builds in action for the first time as tournament players will begin playing the Alpha build of Yatagarasu AoC from this Thursday, then upgrade to the Beta and retail builds as they’re released. What’s more, players are competing for $1,000 in cash each season, so we’re in for some exciting high level competitive Yatagarasu play! Don’t miss this!
For full details, see Level Up’s season announcement here: http://www.levelup-series.com/2014-summer-fall-tournament-season/

Level Up tournament players won’t be the only ones to get their hands on the Alpha build of Yatagarasu AoC! Also on August 21st, the same Alpha build to be featured on The Runback will be released to Beta Access qualifying backers from the Yatagarasu AoC IndieGogo campaign! Backer access will be updated to Beta and full retail builds also as they are rolled out over the coming weeks.

Backer access to the new builds will be provided via Steam keys, which will be distributed directly to each backer and everyone will be able to discuss the game via Steam Discussion group which will open this week. More details about the build features, etc. will be announced on Thursday.

Beta Access backers > Expect your Steam key to arrive at the mail address you provided at the IndieGogo campaign on Thursday.

We have many new exciting changes and features to follow in upcoming builds, but in many ways, this week marks the start of the countdown to Yatagarasu AoC’s full release, and everyone at the Yatagarasu dev team and Nyu Media are very excited for people to get their hands on Yatagarasu AoC for the first time!

That's the news to get this week started! Watch this space for more updates coming this week and visit yatagarasu-FTG.com to catch up on the developer diary posts to date!

Least they're finally moving it out in some way.

I wish I'd would've known about the kickstarter and stuff earlier, I feel so left out.

I dabbled with the original game for about 20 mins; I've enjoying it a lot. Feels just like the vintage stuff (which I've grown to prefer), really pleasant break from today's products. Wish there was some other way to get in on the AoC beta though. :(

:D An alpha version is cool but a beta would've been better. The new intro looks really nice, i can't wait until this Fall to get the full game.
