My apologies if this is the wrong section for this, but I have an interesting question to ask.

As you may know, in December 1994/January 1995, Capcom released the beloved cult classic "X-Men: Children of the Atom" on their CP System 2, marking the beginning of Capcom's FG venture in the Marvelverse.

You may also know that Capcom likes to make updated revisions to some of their games (most notably Street Fighter 2 and later on Street Fighter 4 & 5)...something they did not do with X-Men COTA.

Which is where my question comes in: if Capcom would have made an updated revision of "X-Men Children of the Atom", which improvements would you guys liked to see?

Which tweaks to the main game mechanics would you guys want to see from such an updated revision? And which characters would you guys want to see rebalanced, be it with buffs/nerfs or otherwise? Please let me know, complete with a proper explanation as to why you feel that way.
It would be very interesting to hear that!



Suggested game mechanics changes so far:
  • push blocking (from MSH/MvC onwards)
  • tag mode (from X-Men vs SF and onwards)
  • special assist characters (from MvC1)
  • EX versions of characters

...how about suggestions that have nothing to do with PotS or any other MUGEN creator?

Just...assume for a moment that MUGEN doesn't exist.

For a Super XMCOTA'CE Turbo Penultimate Hyper Edition, I guess they would have added Gambit, Rogue, Sabretooth, and maybe Omega Red.  Longer arcade mode with chance of mirror matches.

I dunno.  I'm not super familiar with what is actually different from COTA and later games in terms of gameplay besides the obvious.  It's already a lot like the MVC games.  I guess COTA didn't have any of the special blocking from MSH or MVC, so maybe push blocking would make the cut in an update.

Honestly... a better roster. Like, I get that there is an absence of villains probably because that game was based on earlier versions of the show, but even then there are some characters like Jean and Jubilee who could actually be there and have cool movesets. Hell, revisions with later seasons of the show including more villains like Mr. Sinister and the Hellfire Club would be nice, choices like Silver Samurai and Omega Red are so questionable considering how little they showed up in the show.

...wait, Omega Red was already playble in vanilla COTA

hmm...that might be a bit too large of a change for a simple revision, but...I'll note that down anyway, just in case

...well, a second revision wouldn't remove characters from the first revision, so Silver Samurai and Omega Red would have to stay, that's for sure

Hello.

Well, would be nice if the complete roster is from the begining and not hidden. Akuma is already in the game, what about Vega (dictator) with SF2 sprites? What about Ex versions of some characters like Wolverine in MVC2?

Well, these are my suggestions or ideas.

They should have add Spiderman early as a secret character.

Spiderman was usual Xmen guest character in comics before Capcom had hold Xmen IP

Spidey has cross Xmen video games countless times from the snes, genesis, gb and the PSX activision XMen FG

As for Xmen characters

They should had gone with Sabertooth, Rogue and Gambit as early but it looks like Marvel Exec are the one that dictates the character in COTA since its more of a comic promotion for characters active in a saga that time but in Japan XMen 90s cartoons are the familiar and accessible to the masses than the 90s comicbooks becauseof import requirements

As for mechanics

MVC1 ExtraPartner would do wonders to XMen Cota like having other character like Cable, Jean, ProfX, Bishop, Jubilee, Forge, Mystique, Toad and etc that appeared in the cartoons.

...sure, they'd be just downports of their X-Men vs Street Fighter selves with any necessary balancing changes done, but hey, that's still something
and in the case of Rogue, it would mean more X-Men characters she can steal moves from  :mlol:

I had fond memories of X-Men Children of the Atom where I first saw in my nearby shop houses back in year 1994 or 1995 where people were playing X-Men Children of the Atom and even saw people fighting Juggernault as well as Gouki which at that time, I was puzzled on why Gouki was there. In year 2000, I finally got to play it, but it was in PC version. At that time, I don't know the CPU had great advantage towards player which made the game broken for PC such as those chain combos and that means I did not play the "real" X-Men Children of the Atom :mlol: Anyway, I mainly main Iceman and Cyclops mostly, the three characters that I was familiar were Wolverine, Cyclops and Omega Red as I played Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter before playing X-Men Children of the Atom, but I did not main them except for Wolverine.

When I played X-Men Children of the Atom, I was surprised that Wolverine did not have his Berserker Barrage special move and it was a hyper move in X-Men Children of the Atom. After I knew about the tier list thing, I was surprised that Wolverine was in the top tier where I find him difficult to use without the Berserker Barrage special move. After I knew how to input the code to select Gouki where I almost forgot that he was in the game after he shown up as CPU opponent before fighting Juggernault, I was surprised to see his appearance, I started to main him mostly. To me in X-Men Children of the Atom, he was like Ryu + Ken = Gouki judging from his movesets :P and also because of X-Men Children of the Atom, I started to main Gouki mostly throughout my entire life time until some years ago :P

Well, I did not play the game seriously and also I was playing the PC version, so I can't really say much, but what I am curious is if Capcom decided to make an update to the game, definitely plenty of characters are gonna have buffs and nerfs for sure where it will determine a new tier list, so I am curious on having Juggernault and magneto as their playable counterparts, maybe an Ex version of every characters based on their Marvel vs. Capcom 2's movesets? There are two wolverines in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, so maybe the one with adamantium would do ala mvc movesets. Gouki's Ex version would be his appearance in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 at most. I was wondering, what about having Cable, Marrow, Rogue, Gambit and Sabretooth in from the X-Men universe in Marvel vs. Capcom 2? It might make sense as well.

My real life is coming soon........!

Sabertooth has Birdie because of the Marvel exec priorities, same thing we got Armored Spidey in MVSF and Metal Ironman on MVC1 because it's the time stark is using a remote controlled armor. Yeah Sabertooth, Rogue and Gambit should be playable because they directly interact and engage in a fight in the cartoons.

The special partners for MVC1 are for characters that doesn't directly fight in the cartoons like Jubilee, Jean and ProfX

I can't say anything about future MUGEN/IKEMEN plans as of this moment, but let's just say I have...a good reason to be interested in all the feedback I am receiving.

Also, I have noticed that I have gotten a few suggestions regarding new mechanics or mechanics changes, but no feedback regarding possible buffs or nerfs for the pre-existing COTA characters...
Would be nice to hear those, too. After all, a second revision does rebalance playable characters as well.

MSH and COTA maybe broken but those 2 games may have the considerable broken making the balance work kinda have a workaround to each other unlike the brokeness of MVC2 and XvSF which is high regarded today but if you look at the tier there is a huge gap that they result to ratio battle.

Unless were talking about Magneto COTA, which is a unusable character. Magneto MSH isnt that broken even with the Shield still present as a gem install.

I'm more of a purist, so I would just update what needs to be updated and leave the rest un-touched.

I would just add push-blocking, introduce everyone who has been added in later titles (Gambit, Rogue, Sabretooth, Apocalypse, Cable, Marrow) as well as new characters.

I would then maybe balance the damage (it was a bit extreme in COTA) and give some characters some well needed extra moves (Poor Iceman still had only one super move in MvC2)

I don't care much for guest characters, but I wouldn't mind either.
