People just like to have fun. What doesn't make sense is that people will sit around watching those videos for several hours and attempt to make their own in every possible environment. One of my classes made a video and it was just depressing.

In old greece you were considered fun if you were able to repeat pieces of famous speeches by heart, you made yourself part of it.
Roman soldiers would quote famous books in grafitti, writing famous words in the walls hoping to evoke in the reader the feeling they got fromt he original pieces.
This repetition of "feeling"  where you do something to evoke a sort of short term nostalgia has always been with us as a race.

A local furniture store around here did a Harlem Shake video for a commercial and it was depressingly awful.  They didn't even use the right song, so it was just a handful of middle-aged people in rented mascot heads shimmying around to generic electronica.

The Simpsons version of the Harlem Shake was just... no. Wrong music, and there was a part where the room expands into more people. I don't see other Harlem shakes do that.
