Hope this turns out well. It's nice to see CFAS get some recognition.

Barring an unearthed prototype or newly discovered footage, Avel's unfortunately gonna be a whole lot of guesswork.

There is a small chance that Ingrid's story in Street Fighter 6 sheds some light on him at least.
there's an incredibly high chance of that happening, if previous world tour stuff is anything to go by. deep cuts range from Gou, Guy's student and Ninja Commando's father to Nuakan, the dude that Sagat beat to become the emperor of muay thai. i gotta imagine the Metro City setting will at least get a reference to CFAS stuff. dropping that into the game library would be AMAZING, but that ain't happening.

Real life's whack. Right after the last post I had to move across the country, and pretty much leave my old machine in the process. So I had no way to keep progress going in the same rhythm as before; that's why there was no updates ever since.

I didn't spend that time doing nothing, though. There's still some pretty cool pixel-art apps for smartphones out there...!

And so, I managed to dedicate these last couple of weeks doing a very very important state - and the first one that's not present on CvS2...

Midnight Bliss

This was a perfect opportunity to sneak-in his planned alternate costume from the original game. The knotted part of the suit is straight-up taken from Matrimelee's Keith, while the overall pose and proportions are mostly based on KOF's Vanessa (she just fits the archetype so much, I couldn't resist :sweetheart:)

Only one frame is enough for the CFJ's version of the move - although I might eventually add the other frames to fit the Vampire Savior standards as well.

At the time of this post, I finally got a new machine, more powerful than ever! So let's try and get the steam rolling once again. :kugoi:

Imagine, if someone finds a prototype build of CFAS and includes the audio from the game for the characters, I wonder if CFJ has some of those voicelines?

As far as I'm aware, only a few graphics with the name of Blanka were found hidden in the data of CFJ. Although we don't have any info regarding the characters voice lines or even the voice actors, I actually have a backup plan to share once I have enough sprites worthy of a video showcase... (it's not generative AI, I promise. :))

If people can dig up Sonic prototypes out of thin air, it's only a matter of time before we find a prototype.

I pray for the day that one average Sonic fan overlaps their interests with the Street Fighter franchise.

looking pretty great so far! wanted to do this myself at one point, so i'm thrilled to see it!

consider: it ain't exactly 1:1 by any means, BUT the SFxT versions of Kazuya and Steve would cover a lot of the similar animations of D.D.'s kit, based on the location test stuff, while SFxT Hwoarang might be helpful for Rook. Obviously Remy. FEXL Jack, Kairi, and Rosso have some appropriate references in their kits as well. Haiji and Cool from Daraku Tenshi have some specific stuff, like Rook's DP kick. if i find my old scribbles regarding exactly this, i'll gladly share the parallel stuff i planned, but i'm sure better stuff has emerged in the decade since i gave it any thought.

Barring an unearthed prototype or newly discovered footage, Avel's unfortunately gonna be a whole lot of guesswork.

This gets a massive thumbs up from me!

Any help is appreciated! Only if you truly have the spare time though, no need to worry. :tongue3:

Thanks for pointing out all these references! I've also figured out that the Mishima/Kazama guys and Steve have some cool material to pull out from SFxT, but I actually didn't consider Hwoarang to have his fair share of similarities to Rook as well! And yeah, Daraku Tenshi is another game that has some heavy connections to the KOF development history much like CFAS, it's really hard to ignore the similarities.

About Avel, the scarcity of any information about him at least brings one positive thought... I can feel more free to just make sh#t up.

PS2: Not sure if you considered it already, but I was thinking of CvS Benimaru as base for Hook in the eventual case of using actual sprites to convert it

Funny you said that...::) The current (unfinished) sprite I've made for Rook actually uses the same palette as CvS Benimaru!

Spoiler (click to show)

It's still quite rough, though. Some details are missing, and the proportions need a lot of tweaking. And of course, I gotta also adjust the palette ever so slightly so it isn't literally the same as Benimaru's, lol.

Apparently... There's already a direct reference to All-Stars in SF6! :watchout:

It's a very mild one, though... almost harsh, in a way ("been playing" a game that you guys never made avaiable, haha... very "funny" :shifty:)

But yeah, all things considered, there's a non-zero chance we might see some actual connection to the All-Stars for real this time. Ever since the guy that provided the most amount of info back in the SFV days turned out to be the main director of SF6, and the aforementioned deep cuts in regards to the World Tour content. By the way, let's be honest: who would've thought Ingrid of all people would actually be given a chance to return in a canonical Street Fighter game ever again? This truly gives me hope that Capcom might actually shed some light on the other Code-Holders as well.

(Let's just hope they don't pull out the one-dimensional "mysterious goddess from another timeline" shenanigan yet again. Come on, let the girl have a real backstory for once.)

Jump

Bases: SF3's Dudley, CvS Terry

Only after doing research for this one did I realize, that there's actually quite a bunch of characters in CvS2 that have the same jumping animation for all three directions (neutral, forward, backward).

Since D.D. also seems to move like that in the loketest footage, I suppose it's fair game to leave it like this here too.

Also, a small update on a couple of the previous animations; specifically on the legs.

Neetso

Thanks bro :c00l: I'll do what I can.

Alright, some folks pointed out that D.D's shading was a bit too similar to the CPS-2 era, rather than the intended CvS style. So following the feedback, and using @FeLo_Llop:'s concept as a base, I went ahead and updated all the previous animations to a shading that's more similar to CvS Rock's clothes - while also fixing some proportions here and there.

---->

All the updates are in the first post.

And that's why there weren't as much new stuff in the last few weeks (partially, it was also because I took a small break :P)

But there's still something new!

Standing light punch

Once again, CvS Terry was a very good reference.

Niiiice!! a VERY good update. You're doing an amazing job, NDSilva!

[ ?? / ?? ]: Possible W.i.P.

Thanks folks! ^_^

Dash

Bases: Dudley (forward), Rick Strowd (backwards)

In CvS2 fashion, a couple of frames are actually taken from other animations, like crouching and walking. (hey, if the official games can get away with a few shortcuts, I see no problem in doing the same for the sake of consistency :P)

If the result is ok, no problem to me!
Particularly with such a project.
Frankenspriting is used a lot.

If you have a look at SFA1 Rose normal attacks, many of them are variations of other normal moves.

Yep, that's the philosophy I'm going for; if some frankenspriting eventually happen, at least it's gonna be within the boundaries of what the Capcom guys themselves, from that time period, would likely do as well.

Taunt

I like how this one turned out. Simple yet effective. ^_^

Loosely based on this scan that appeared a couple of times on magazine flyers:

And at this point, I couldn't wait any longer. It was time to put all the current pieces together, and show what he actually looks like in-game...!

It's also a good opportunity to talk about how the voice is gonna be handled - my best solution turned out to be using Dante's Japanese voice lines from Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. And there's a couple of reasons for that, if you wanna know more:

Spoiler (click to show)
 • The deep but energetic voice of Toshiyuki Morikawa works very well with how I interpret D.D.'s personality
 • It looks fairly close to the voice lines from the original game's trailers (well, the very little we're able to deduce from all the compressed noise, at least :P)
 • Most people are more familiar with Dante's English voice actor anyway, so this won't look too out of place
 • Having the English voice lines alongside the Japanese ones helps a lot for cross-referencing material, to a non-Japanese speaker like me
 • Dante doesn't shout the specific names of his special attacks, so those voice clips can be repurposed to a lot of different scenarios without any trouble. And the fact he just so happens to have the most extensive movelist of UMvC3 helps on that even more. :sugoi:

For now, that's it! Oh, here's also the uncropped version of the small portrait, as a bonus:

Man, this going along very well. Very excited about that project. Keep up the great work!

Choosing Toshiyuki Morikawa for Daisuke Dejima was a great idea :D

[A suggestion for Death/Avel in future, I suppose that you would like to add Koichi Yamadera's[Beerus from DBZ, Spike from Cowboy Bebop] voice to Death. It fits with his boss attitude]

If you find yourself needing more audio, you can even use Morikawa's voice clips from other games where he voiced Dante such as DMC4 and 5, or Project x Zone.

Sorry if I'm a bit late to the thread. Seeing DD finally get a chance at being a full character is really exciting.

Though I do strongly suggest cleaning up his shading a lot. Not only does it look rather far from resembling CvS's shading style, I feel you're applying way too much anti-alias around every outline to the point the sprite is heavily busy with shading detail everywhere you look at it, giving it very little breathing room to properly convey the depth of his volume. Cleaning up a lot of the anti alias pixels around the sprite and using the bright colors more sparingly goes a long way to fixing the depth (and overall making him more animation friendly for the rest of the sprites)

Don't know if you'll want to go back to tweaking his shading, but figured I'd go out of my way to try giving a hand on interpreting something that's easier to animate and easier on the eyes, as well as more CvS looking in general.

you made a well done job but you should animate his clothes

I might indeed look for more audio sources as the project gets further in development. Thanks for the suggestions!

You made a really good point. I actually still have some trouble trying to translate his design into pixel art, in differentiating the shading from the outlines and whatnot.

I will definitely think about it. Thank you so much for the feedback. :c00l:
