Infinite combos and lackluster gameplay, this game is terrible compared to games such as Street Fighter. I bet that if Mortal Kombat were owned by Capcom, the game would be much better. Agree, disagree, post your opinion.

k

I don't see this as very threadworthy.

Orochi Kamina

me neither. :-\ very doubtful that this will stay an open thread. This thread just seems pointless and unnecessary.

I think if it was owned by Capcom it would suck more. It would have no gore and a bunch or Ryu sprite swaps, with Geki's head frankensprited over Ryu's face.

I also disagree that MK sucks. It's a different game completely and when it came out it was the best new thing.

I do agree that Midway ran it poorly with all the fucking spriteswaps they used in their releases.

Messatsu

Nobody can save Mortal Kombat because one of the founders will be insisted upon being involved and he will end up fucking everything up.

Many people risk their lives everyday by having Mugen.

This entirely.

Second, no one under the age of 23 (maybe 22) can really give a legitimate reason why the MK genesis is godly or complete shit. Can't speak for shamrock but I remember distinctly witnessing a lot of tourneys held at the times square arcade in indianapolis....and it was always packed to the brim. SF was popular but digitized blood splatter with bone-breaking dial combos and "toasty!" shouts was THE thing.

Third, those that are old enough to experience Mortal Monday, the ones who use to love playing the games just for its own unique gameplay and not over analyze its faults, the....you know..snobby fighting game elitists (the same people who loved the fuck out of Tekken 3 and Tag at their inceptions but disemboweled them after VF4 came out), you're points are invalid as well. You lost the kid spirit, shame on you.

I have no idea where I'm going with this. I just love MK and get irriated with those who not so much dislike it but dislike it when trying to compare it to KOF or SF, let alone not being able to grasp how unbelievably popular it was in the heydays. Anyway MK rules and if you say it sucks then so does your mother. Your mother sucks. My cock.

S.D.

MK's different, I'd say that it's not as good for tournies as street fighter, there is definitely fun to be had with it, whether it be just observing the fatalities, or back when mash punch could take off 40% life, the game is by no means bad.

I have many names,

Although I do like Street Fighter, I put MK over it in most cases.

The whole palette swap thing only started from trying to put more content in a game with limited memory. As such, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Reptile. After that it became tradition, and I'm sure getting rid of even some of the palette swaps would be like some people hearing that Ryu wouldn't be in SF3.
QuoteImagine a zanguief runing to attack ryu, ryu does a quick+kind of weak fast punch and hit the chest of zanguief, will this punch be enough to zanguief say/think \"oh no, this punch hurted a little, I better stop the attack and put my hand on my chest to help contain the pain while ignoring if ryu is going to make other attacks now"

All I have to say is that I had endless hours of mindless fun playing UMK3 back in the 90's. That is all.

♠Treasure Sniper

I had more mindless fun playing MK4 in my early years

oh tobi stop playing with robots and penises.

spikeriley

Mortal Kombat does not suck.

So the games had pallete swaps of the ninjas, be it they are male, female, or robots, but what set them apart from all the Ryu clones of Street Fighter was that they had different move sets.

Now, I know Reptile had all of Scorpion and Sub-Zero's moves when he was in MK1, but come MKI, he finally got his own move lists.  The same could be said about Smoke, Kade, and Noob Saibot. Jade was a clone of Kitana and Smoke and Noob Saibot both had Scorpion's moves, but come UMK3 and MKT, Jade and Noob got their own moves (and Jade got her own weapon), but Smoke's two forms would be shafted.  Human Smoke still had Scorpion's moves, and while Smoke, being a pallete swap of the two cyber ninjas Cyrax and Sektor, had a trident that acted like Scorpion's Spear and had different finishing moves, he had Sektor's Teleport Uppercut and his armageddon falality was given to Cyrax when he appeared in MK Gold.

I ate Ed Boon's peabody.

Cybaster

Remove the fatalities from MK and you get a copy of SF2TM game, only with different chars swaps. Now, who can tell me SF2TM is a good game ?

kakkoii superhero

I played Mortal Wombat 1 till Ultimate Mortal Wombat 3
It's fun in its own way, and the awesomeness of the uppercut rules, but that normal standing punches are  :-X

please dont

Some people only play it for the blood, and I can easily pull a thread from somewhere on this forum that proves that fact.

IMO, it sucks. The combo system is fucked up beyond belief and there's way too many spriteswaps colourswaps.

I thought it was fun up to Trilogy, but yeah, the series as a whole was gigabroken. Whether it be the super stiff gameplay, the unreasonably high damage output, or the very broken AI at times (Scorpion and Jade in N64 Trilogy WTF), it was at least fun until Trilogy.

4, on the other hand, was essentially just mediocre, extremely clunky, and they removed all of the fun things like Friendships that made the series fun, removing all actual fun and turning it into another generic gore-based fighter from that point on.

I do believe that everyone (in that age range) who nowadays thinks the games are trash had loads of fun with them at the time, and tend to agree that MK2 still is a good game.  People just developed a better understanding of fighting games as they continued to come out and realized MK can't hold up as well or last as long as other franchises, they are not uninformed opinions.
