I ran into an interesting piece on how today's fighters are and discussing the future of what they should be.

I'm a bit surprised no one put this up yet.

Thoughts/opinions?

Cazaki

Eh. Everyone has their pans to "save" the fighting game genre but it's not really something we can control nor push.

I agree completely with everything that Seth Killian said. It's almost creepy.

QuoteYou might be the world's greatest Clay Fighter player, but with only four other people still playing that game, there's less collective meaning in that title, less challenge, and, correspondingly, less incentive for others to get into the game.

As one of the best Real Bout 2 players in the country, this hits home pretty hard. :(

QuotePart of the glory of achievement is difficulty, but there are good kinds of difficulty (inventing a new strategy, outthinking a great opponent) and bad kinds of difficulty (making a move really physically hard to do), and the genre hasn't always been good about distinguishing between the two.

I agree with this, but the problem I have with it is that this can go for links and combos too, and Street Fighter 4 definitely has that problem. Though moves themselves are very easy to pull off.

Don't think the fighting game genre is on the verge of imploding. It's not over-saturated like in the 90s, and there are no signs really that things are going to go back to how they were for the 10 or so years before SF4. The only companies really developing fighting games at the moment are the best of the best anyway. And the only people who can really screw things up right now are Capcom, and it would take releasing consistently bad or aggravating games over a long period of time, with no quality inbetween. Netherrealms did well even when the fighting game genre was dead(all the 3d Mortal Kombat games sold very well, whether or not they were critically acclaimed), so they got nothing to worry about.

I however do think the ENTIRE video game industry is in danger of imploding. At the release of the next generation of consoles.

While I do heavily disagree with Caddie believing the entire video game industry my implode(that's....way too off base), I do agree the industry is going to suffer a major hit due to the main bullcrap that's been happening this generation.

But back onto topic, each person had their own point and showed it and I agreed with most of them, but while Mike Z did stated that the FGC isn't in danger of completely imploding, it's definitely has the main problem of not reaching out to new people and keep them there.

And I do believe Skullgirls's Tutorial is the absolute best tutorial BECAUSE they not only tell you what to do, but WHY to do it and how it's good for you(only Blazblue's Tutorial was closer, but it never really touched onto the combo aspect enough, making it easy to drop comboes due to timing.) which I believe is a step in the right direction.

Great points for sure guys.

If you look at the history of the market, you usually have your upswings and downswings. The market crashed back in the Atari days (ET anyone??) and then Nintendo revitalized the entire market with the NES, good business practices or not. Look at how far tech has come in the past 25 years. If you're looking at the exploding/imploding aspect, SEGA has that covered: they attempted to pioneer everything, and as a result, they created their own demise. Even Nintendo was losing ground with the SNES before Donkey Kong Country saved the day. The PS3 had a very rough start until its price was substancially dropped.

With the SEGA example or not, I think the market will inevitably go through an upswing and then a downswing. The gaming business isn't going anywhere. It's where its headed; that is the question. The transition to the next wave of hardware, as much as we may want it or not, is going to most likely be rough. And then things will settle back to a much more stable state.

I'd like to report two robots on the MFG forums: One is EXShadow. The other is Saikoro.

There should be a Saikoro plugin for Photoshop.

Tell that to KOF and Blazblue....2D fighters will never hit their ceiling, if anything, 3D fighters still have huge problems being integrated fully(DOA and VF are the only true successful 3D fighters)

wish to believe it, but  in capcom case it seems they won't be doing anymore new 2D games , if ever did , its gana be  yet another remake of a game they already made

DOA is kind of ok, if it wasn't for the counter abuse , as for VF, then thats the worst fighting game series I have ever came across , 5 games in the series already and they still uses the same boss over and over , no endings for characters , characters moves so slaw while fighting as if they had woked up from an early morrning sleep, and last but not least the game just plain boring as hell

its Tekken series that is the successful 3D fighters , along with Soul Series , atleast they don't use the same bosses over and over again

MellyInChains

tell me how the hell kage is slow at all

also soul calibur 1 and 2 both used inferno as their final boss

tell me how is he not? even if he was fast, what about every single other character in the game?

its true Soul 1 and 2 used the same boss, but not after that they didn't, VF from 1 to 5 still uses the same freaken boss without a change , there is not depth nether in the story or even the gameplay itself
