FF IV Sequel this time it's for wiiware

From TheTanooki.com and Siliconera

Square Enix has released a spiffy new trailer for Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. Though there’s nothing in it we didn’t already know, it’s nice to see the game in action. Some dual techniques are proudly on display, as are the updated character sprites. The music, a new version of the classic world map theme from Final Fantasy IV, is also a nice treat.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years will be released as 9 separate episodes starting June 1st. Square Enix still hasn’t revealed a price point.

FF IV: The After Years Trailer

Wait a second… “experience the captivating sequel in nine episodic tales”… is Square Enix going to sell Final Fantasy IV: The After Years in episodes?

Twelve chapters were released in Japan on mobile phones. That number includes a prologue, semifinal, and final episode.  Some of these like the prologue, Kain’s, and Ceodore’s chapters appear to be bunched together in the US release.

The After Years is a sequel not a remake...that's why it's called The After Years.

Story-wise, it could be called "Final Fantasy IV: Again", but looks fun. FF IV will be forever my favorite game of the series and it's nice to see it getting some love.

It's a remake (port ?) of the sequel that came out on cellphone.
I wish it came on PSN...

Semi-related, but I wish the remake of SaGa one had come out in this fashion for download in english. Only versions available are sadly the Wonderswan and mobile phones. :\

On topic though, I'm not sure I'm all that wild about Square's restomping of old grounds with these games. Did FF4 really need a sequel? The game ended on an excellent note, and everything I read about the events of this game make it feel like Advent Children did (Actually worse than AC, since that did handle a few of the side characters nicely).

@KFM : the After Years came out quite a while ago on cellphone IINM, it's not part of the "recent" sequels/remakes craze that's been going around since Compilation of FF7. Otherwise, FF4TAY does show new material and also gives some new stuff to the old stuff, so I'm not sure what you heard of it.

I actually followed the storyline translations as posted on a wikia for the mobile version, it just kinda felt depressing for me. I guess I'm more of the mind that such a storyline is better left up to the reader to decide where it goes after, and these expanded story parts kill the luster a little (something like what if FF6 had a sequel where it blatantly says Shadow was Relm's father or who the hell Gogo is etc).

It's just a personal opinion, I like open ended happy endings to stay that way.

While I enjoyed FFIV, I don't like how like FFX and FF7 it's getting a story expansion, should of just left it alone. While I could understand expanding FF7 because everyone wanted to know what happened after the ending and how the characters got along with their lives, but just like FFX, it's not really necessary since FFIV concluded just fine.

Also this game looks like it was made in RPG Maker. They could of at least of brought the game up to Final Fantasy VI's graphic standards. To this day, I still think FFVI is one of the best looking rpgs I ever played.

I was hoping that this would somehow end up on the DS, but oh well. Kain's still a complete dunce though, by the looks of it.

It looks cool, and FF IV is like my third favorite out of the series, but I don't think I'll pick up a wii or whatever nintendo product they decide to release it on just for The After.

Given that most of FF6's graphic quality came from its art style, I doubt we'll ever see a game quite like it again.

I do see the RPGMaker complaint definitely thought, I hate how much the font sticks out (shallow I know but eh when you're going to see it every five seconds...)

If you're only judging from the screnshots, there's a plot twist about that though, and a fairly decent one too, not the same kind as the sucky twists in FF4.

Cool, that's good to know. I really hated the way they handled it in the original. Kain seemed like such a cool character (and was really useful too), but the cheesy ways in which they had him turning against you just annoyed me.
