Let me explain this.  Numerous Japanese Internet memes from Nico Nico Douga are spreading around the Internet, including YouTube, making several people outside of Japan familiar with some of them.  The most notable examples of Japanese Internet memes are Hatsune Miku, Japanese Ronald McDonald's "RAN RAN RU!", "Gourmet Race", Takakazu Abe (the "Yaranaika?" mechanic from a manga released for homosexuals), HA NA SE (based on Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duel Monsters), Enemy Controller (another one based on Yu-Gi-Oh!), Spooo and several others.
