Just visited the Japanese site for the game, and in the background of the first page they were showing off a new stage. Well, I'm not usually the first person to jump on this bandwagon, but it seems kind of...well, racist. The tribesman in the background have those overly exaggerated lips that people used to draw black people with back in the 20's and stuff. It's pretty bad.

Any thoughts? Am I reading too much into it? Keep in mind, I was one of RE5's biggest defenders, so I don't throw out the term "racist" lightly.

Also, I didn't have time to go through 57 pages to see if anyone mentioned this. If it's already been discussed, kindly point me to which page and I'll leave it be, and I apologize if I brought up an old issue.

Sup?

It should be common knowledge by now that is how Japanese always draws and distinguishes characters.

It's not like they are necessarily wrong either.

Bastard Mami

All of the kof plotholes/nona aigng, etc.. elements have been properly explained.
QuoteDr. Brown Sugar of the World Heroes series is seeking help from various SNK Characters to stop DAMD (the organization behind Neo Dio, as told in World Heroes Perfect), which had stolen his time machine, from altering time. Now it's up for our heroes to go in various timelines and stop this evil.

There's a big difference in the way that picture of Balrog is drawn and the way the lips on those background characters are. Balrog's expression fits the way his lips look there. Also, they are the same color as the rest of his skin. The lips in the KoF background are way different: They are all much different colors from the rest of their skin, and don't look like lips. It's hard to describe.

They're this style of lips:

Spoiler (click to show)
(Spoiler'd for racist issues)

Not to that extent of course, but it's that style.

I'm not saying it's offending me, and I'm not getting upset by it or getting on a soap box, I'm only responding this way because there's a difference between the example you provided and what I'm talking about.

That stage was supposed to be in KOFXII but was cut due to the racism reason. I don't see what's so serious about it though, everyone in the Japanese stage are sumo wrstlers and everyone in the France stage are fat women. The stage makers love fat people apparently...

Ah, that's interesting to know. I know that most of KoFXII's stages contain these sort of stereotypes, I just thought I'd see what other people thought of this one in particular.

I'm not even going to begin to talk about why it's silly to bring that up when it's a game where pretty much everything is completely exaggerated (including characters and moves).

Street fighting is all about analysis, prediction, and reaction. That's it.

If I could ignore popo, if I could ignore boxer, by joe I'm just gonna let this one slide. It's just a different culture, Japan isn't sensitive to these issues.

I'm looking at the stage right now, and...those aren't even people. They look like...not...people.

I wouldn't call it racist since those creatures don't even look human.

Version 3.0 coming... Um...  When I get to it.

Well I don't think that response was necessary. I was just trying to have a discussion about it, no need to be like that.

Again, I wasn't upset by it, just wanted to see what other people thought. Now that you and Tengu have thoroughly tried to make me feel stupid for bringing it up, I'll be on my way I guess.

I at first thought you were on to something but when I saw the stage in question I couldn't see the connection.  Yes those creatures had the lips you were talking about. but putting big lips on something doesn't make it racist.

Version 3.0 coming... Um...  When I get to it.

Nero D.

Yes, it does, if it looks like that. But I don't really consider those..."things" as humans. And being a Brotha, I don't look jack-shit like that. Brrr.

Well, I think the things in the stage are supposed to be human. Little tribes people, or pigmies or something like that. They look human, because they have human facial features (aside form the lips in question)), and seem to have human bodies (exaggerated, short, fat bodies, but still human in structure). Why would SNK randomly have a stage full of weird forest creatures that aren't even human? Seems a bit of a stretch, IMO.

I don't know, maybe racist was too strong of a word, which is why I hesitated to use it.

Anyway, I'm psyched that King is in. I'm holding out hope for Oswald and K', but I understand K's story is over and Oswald might be dead. I can hope anyway.

Really? You think so? Well I'm probably in denial because the thought of actual people, if even in a vg environment looking like that is just...:gonk:

Insensitive? Yes. Racist? Not anymore so than what's usually portrayed in Japanese media. It's not right, but it's not something worth ranting about at this point imo.

K' Team was leaked a long while ago.

I don't think I was ranting, just trying to discuss.

Oh, I was going by who was revealed on the game's actual site. Who's on his team?

K', Maxima, Kula/Whip (last one is still not clear)

Cyanide

And although that's pretty obvious. The main confirmation we've had is the K' team logo was accidentally uploaded.

SNK like their obscured images they do. This is just like the last one where everyone was worried clark wouldn't be in. And he came out in the final loc test. They'll do that here. Especially as they hate drawing K'. They're going to have to get his sprites right NOW and never need to redraw them again or he's going to suck.

They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it's not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.

RunningWild

I don't think it'll offend anyone. How many Indigenous tribes of people do you know play obscure fighting games?

Besides, have you ever seen what those Indigenous people look like in real life? If anything, SNK is doing them a favor.

Remember Solo the Earth Shaman from Breath Of Fire II?

I'd hit that one on the bottom...
